TJI Joists Vs. Plated Trusses
TJI Joists
Lightweight (3 lb/ft) and trimmable.
Wrapped in TimberStrand LSL rim board giving you a solid nailing surface with high shear values. Allows 1-hour separation between units and corridor.
No need for strongbacks.
Reduces costs (not just in floors but in other building materials) thanks to its shallow depth floor system design.
Does not require a fully sprinkled floor cavity (NFPA 13 Section 8.14.1.2.6)
Uses only carpet and pad to achieve Sound Transmission Class (STC) and Impact Insulation Class (IIC) ratings of 50.
Plated Trusses
Heavy (5-6 lb/ft) and cannot be trimmed.
No shear transfer -- requires 1x4 nailing strip on its perimeter just to prevent racking. Needs the use of draft stop or extra gypsum to achieve the 1-hour separation between units and corridors.
Strongbacks are required to help it maintain some 1-hour fire assemblies. 2x6 strongbacks are needed at 10’ on-center to reduce vibration.
Uses a deep floor system design (16” +).
Requires a fully sprinkled floor cavity unless gap is completely filled with noncombustible insulation.
Requires concrete overlay or a sound-deadening mat to achieve STC and IIC ratings of 50.
